The Parish of Abbots Langley seeks a permanent Organist

St Lawrence

St. Lawrence’s is a church which values its musical, choral tradition. We seek an organist who would love playing our highly regarded two manual and pedal pipe Nicholson’s organ (details here: NPOR | Survey [N14009]), accompanying classical Anglican hymnody and choir anthems. We have a weekly Parish Eucharist (9.30am, using the Thorn Mass Setting) and have recently established a pattern of monthly Choral Evensongs. There are 5-8 weddings per year in church, and around 10 funerals. Other services throughout the year include Candlemas, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Advent Sunday and our wonderful Nine Lessons and Carols – a real highlight of community life.

We currently have one organist who regularly plays for us at one or two services per month. We hope this arrangement will continue and provide our permanent organist with some welcome flexibility. Choir direction, and (in consultation with the Vicar) hymn selection, is in the hands of our Director of Music, Marianne Ryall.

Our normal payment rate is £75 per service. If occasional attendance at a mid-week choir rehearsal was deemed necessary, an additional payment of £50 would be made for this. Weddings and funerals are both charged at £125. These fees are reviewed on an annual basis.

We estimate that if an organist played at 42 Parish Eucharists each year, at six choral evensongs, five weddings and five funerals, and five special services, they would earn just over £5000. This calculation is for illustrative purposes only.

This appointment will be made in line with the Parish’s Safeguarding Policy, and under ‘Safer Recruitment’ guidelines.

For further discussion, please contact the Vicar, the Revd. Dr. Peter Waddell at vicar@abbotslangley.org.uk or by calling 07552 359046.
