The Parish of Abbots Langley

Music

Music plays an important part in our worship at St Lawrence. We have a very fine organ (see details below) and an excellent adult choir to lead our singing at our main services; with a youth choir leading the more informal worship.

THE ADULT CHOIR

St Lawrence Church has a long and rich musical tradition. The robed choir of 4-part (SATB) adult voices plays an integral role in leading the worship of the church. The choir sings at the main Sunday service (usually Parish Communion); major festivals; Choral Evensong; and Weddings (when requested).

The choir sings a broad repertoire of music from the Anglican choral tradition and there are also opportunities to take part in concerts as well as visits to sing services at cathedrals and other churches. The Choir sings regularly at services at St Albans Cathedral and at other Cathedrals and Churches by invitation.

We are currently looking for a new Organist and Choir Master but are in the very capable hands of our Assistant Organist, Andrew Howarth, and our Choir Conductor, Brenda Southorn, during the vacancy.

If you sing and are interested in joining the church choir or if you would like more information, please get in touch via the “Contact Us” page. There is no formal audition to join the choir; you are very welcome to come along to a couple of practices to find out more and to see whether it suits you.

THE ORGAN

The church houses a fine two-manual Nicholson organ which was built in 1971 after a serious fire destroyed the previous instrument in 1969. It is located in front of the West wall of the Corpus Christi Chapel (facing East), adjacent to the choir stalls. It has both electric key and stop action and with only 19 speaking stops, it has tremendous versatility and is suitable for a huge variety of organ music. It is an excellent example of a Nicholson organ. The specification is:
