The Parish of Abbots Langley

Adults

The Choir

St Lawrence Church has a long and rich musical tradition. The robed choir of 4-part (SATB) adult voices plays an integral role in leading the worship of the church. The choir sings at the following:

The main Sunday service (usually Parish Communion); Major festivals; Choral Evensong; Weddings (when requested)

The choir sings a broad repertoire of music from the Anglican choral tradition and there are also opportunities to take part in concerts as well as visits to sing services at cathedrals and other churches. The choir was part of a hugely successful concert in celebration of the Diamond Jubilee and has also been invited to sing Choral Evensong at St Albans Cathedral.

We are currently in the hands of David Southorn as Choir Director and a rota of willing musicians as Organists.

If you sing and are interested in joining the church choir or if you would like more information, please get in touch with the Choir Director via the “Contact Us” page. There is no formal audition to join the choir; you are very welcome to come along to a couple of practices to find out more and to see whether it suits you.

You can find out more about joining the choir by looking at our choir flyer.

Mothers' Union

The MU is especially concerned with all that strengthens and preserves marriage and Christian family life.  To achieve this they try to develop prayer and spiritual growth and resource their members to take practical action to improve conditions for families, internationally, nationally and in the community in which they live.  They meet in St Lawrence Church at 10.15 am for Corporate Communion on the second Wednesday of the month; followed by coffee and a chat in the Breakspear Room.  One evening a month they meet in the Breakspear Room, St Lawrence Church, at 8.00 pm (usually the third Tuesday of the month) for discussion or to hear visiting speakers; occasionally they go out for an evening walk or a meal.  Visitors are always welcome to any meeting.

Read The Mothers' Union Prayer.

House groups

For further information, or if you would like to join any of the groups, please contact the Church Office via the contact us page.  The groups normally meet from 8.00 to 10.00 pm.

Wednesday housegroup

The meeting usually begins with a tea or coffee and ends with a glass of wine.  In between the the group gradually finds itself engaged in radical discussion of matters of faith and practice with no holds barred.  Nothing is too sacred to question.  In recent years they have studied The Shack, examined the Bible, discussed Church Times articles, analysed some of Paul's New Testament Letters, studied The Thoughtful Guide to Faith and critically discussed just about everything we say and do in Church.  Faith tends to have been strengthened not weakened, by open and frank sharing of beliefs and doubts.  They all value the fellowship and trust which continues to grow within the group.  They usually meet on the fourth Wednesday of the month.

Thursday housegroup

This group meets on the last Thursday of each month and varies how they study - sometimes using a book which they all read and then discuss or sometimes following a course often using dvds as well as books.  Currently they are reading a book written by the Revd Peter Waddell (the Vicar) - Joy, The Meaning of the Sacraments.

Sunday Lunch Club

If you, or anyone you know, is elderly and lonely or lives with a disability please encourage them to think about coming to lunch in the Church Hall on a Sunday, just twice a month - usualy the first and third Sundays.  A full two-course home-cooked meal, followed by tea or coffee, is served for a cost of just £5.00.  But we ask that you don't just turn up as we need to know numbers in advance, and numbers are limited, so please phone the Church Office (01923 261795) or contact us to book a place or find out more.
